Why is my dog scared to eat near our puppy and hides her food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old

Poli was the only dog we have had until five months ago when we decided to adopt Lido a Mix breed puppy girl. At first it was diffcult but now they enjoy the company. What we have noticed is that when its time to eat, Poli is showing some kind of scare from Lido and instead of eating from the bowl, she grab a good bunch of food and hide herself to eat the food. Lido seems to have some type of control over the food... what should you recommend to have Poli to avoid that behavior?

I would feed them in their crates or in separate areas. That way they both can relax during meals and you will avoid an escalation of dominance over food which could result in aggressive behavior and fights. Also Poli may become more fearful and anxious which is not a good thing. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your dogs.
