Why is my dog suddenly shaking, lethargic, and can't stand or walk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 9 years and 8 months old | 50 lbs

9yo 50lbs male dog suddenly shaking, lethargic, and has difficulty moving. Suddenly cannot walk up or down stairs and struggles to stand up or lay down. No specific area of his body (limbs, hips, shoulders, abdomen, spine, neck) seems tender or bothersome. No evidence of trash or other foods he may have gotten into. He just had a normal bowel movement - no diarrhea or vomiting. He doesn't seem to want to be touched. Very abnormal behavior for him. What's going on with my dog?

It could be that Tyson is in pain, and it sounds like he is quite painful if he cannot walk up or down stairs, and struggles to stand up and lay down. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic for dogs and can be fatal if given. Because this has come on so suddenly and he sounds like he's not doing well, I think he should see a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.
