Why does my rescue dog run back to his old home after a month?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 29 days old | 25 lbs

My dog was a rescue from a couple up the block. I've had him a month but if he sneaks out he runs back up there. He's walked and etc but will still go up there and I have to chase him around. Even if I yell for him. Why?

That used to be Ash's home, and he's still recognizing it as such which would be why he runs back there. It will take him time to adjust to being in a new home and recognizing that your place is his home now. I would see if the couple has any toys of his still that has the smell of the old place, and bring them into your new home. A familiar smell may help with the transition. To keep him from running away back there, I would not let him be outside alone for now. I hope this helps.
