How to train adopted German Shepherd to stop jumping, chasing cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 85 lbs

I adopted a wonderful 2 year old male German Shepherd (Tank) from a previous family 2 days ago. He is very sweet but he has a bad jumping habit around new people and also chases the cats around the house. He doesn't try to hurt them, he only wants to play. The previous family NEVER had time to be around Tank or train him properly so he was always alone in the house or on his chain, so I understand his excitement of a better life. I just need some advice to teach him some good manners! Thank you!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tank. Congratulations on adopting him and giving him a better life! I recommend enrolling him in a basic obedience class. It will help socialize him to other animals and people as well as give you guidelines for training him at home. The consistency of going weekly helps keep both of you on track as well. Best of luck!
