My dog has pancreatitis and diarrhea. How long until he poops?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 90 lbs

We took Cody to the er vet. He does have pancreatitis. It is a early case. He is on a bland diet and lots of meds. He had diarrhea really bad for 1-1/2 days. He is eating good and acting pretty normal. He had 2 (1 cup each) bland meals in around 17 hours but has not passed fecal matter yet. I am thinking it was pretty empty inside he gut and needs time to get on tract. How long is in a safety range for him to go? Thank you.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cody! The poop will come as long as he is eating. It may take 2-3 days. You are correct he is cleaned out from the diarrhea and fasting (if he was), plus the medications and the chicken and rice bind dogs up. As long as he is eating, not vomiting and not straining the poop will come! Good luck!
