Why is my dog's lip swollen, painful, with swollen neck nodes? Cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 11 years and 2 months old

My 12 year old golden retriever’s lower lip seems swollen and is not letting me touch her. Seems like she’s in pain. Her lymph nodes in her neck are swollen as well. Does this mean she has cancer?

She could have an infection in her mouth, a tooth or gum disease that is causing this. I recommend getting her in to see your vet right away as she sounds very uncomfortable. Your vet will do an exam, possibly labwork and/or x-rays and, based on these results, should be able to tell you what the problem is and how best to treat it.
