Why is my poodle yelping in pain, subdued, and shaking her head?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Female | 4 years and 8 months old

My miniature poodle since yesterday has started yelping out in pain occasionally. She seems very subdued (she's normally quite hyper!) and doesn't even want to chase our cats like normal. She is also shaking her head periodically. Her ears are clean and not smelly, although she does have a lot of fur growing inside her ears. At one point, when I touched her under her abdomen, she yelped when I touched in between her last 2 nipples on the left side, in between her ribs. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I'm sorry to hear that Tam isn't feeling well. It sound like something is making her painful. She could have something causing pain in her ear which is then causing her to be hyperactive, or have pain elsewhere and her ear isn't related. The best course of action would be to have your veterinarian examine her and isolate the source of discomfort and then be able to help find ways to help her feel better. I hope this helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
