Why is my kitten's ear flaky with hair loss after ear mites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 2.4 lbs

I just adopted a kitten who had ear mites and fleas about three weeks ago. We got the fleas taken care of right away, but the ear mites took about 2 weeks to get rid of per prescription direction. She’s been scratching at her right ear and I decided to take a peak, it’s dead flaky skin and some hair is coming out. I feed her royal canin, so I don’t believe it’s diet related. I’m not sure what else it could be though. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

This looks like a possible bacterial or yeast infection now. This can happen secondary to a primary issue such as mites. You will have to take Maggie to your vet to get the ear debris tested again and treated based on what type of infection it is (bacterial or yeast). I hope that Maggie's ear issues resolve soon! Best wishes and take care.

I'm sorry to hear Luna isn't feeling well. There are a few treatments available for ear mites. A product called Revolution is applied to the skin and that will kill the ear mites. There are also medications you put into the ears to kill the mites- your vet should have an option for you. Lastly, I recommend a vet see her to make sure it's mites and not an infection. I would leave the ears alone until you see the vet so they can diagnose the cause. Good luck and kisses to Luna!
