Does my dog need teeth cleaning? Her breath smells bad, what helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 18.8 lbs

Do dogs teeth need cleaning? If so, how do I clean her mouth and teeth? Using a special thing like a denta stick or something else? She has bad breath and eats healthy food; just concerned there may be something behind why her breath smells all the time.

Yes dogs do need teeth cleaning! You can brush Layla's teeth with a specific dog toothbrush and paste you get from a pet store. Do NOT use human toothpaste. Denta sticks are fine. She also needs an exam from a vet. The bad breath could be due to severe gingivitis, tooth root abscess, or a broken tooth. That requires a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing, it cannot be treated at home. Like humans, dogs need a dental cleaning yearly. Contact her vet on Monday to make her an appointment. I hope this helps!
