My dog has yeasty ears, hair loss, and chews feet. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 20 lbs

My dog started earlier this year with yeast build up in the ears and despite various home remedies it would come and go. Over the months his hair started falling out on his body, he's always chewing on his feet, he has what looks like dandruff and he has a very high yeasty odor all the time. Home remedies are no longer helping....what can I try?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks like Harley has a pretty bad skin infection. It is likely a combination of bacteria and yeast. I recommend taking him to a vet to know for sure and get him oral and topical medications. I would be suspicious of an environmental allergy, but the vet can discuss that further with you. There are no home remedies that can treat these types of problems. Good luck and kisses to Harley!
