My dog is biting her leg. She has an itchy pink bump. Is it serious?

Luna has been biting at her hind leg. I noticed a pink bump. It started off with an injury and had a dried crust, but now it looks like this. She has been itching this fairly. Is it something serious? Should I be worried?

It looks like a possible lick granuloma which is from her licking. I would recommend an elizabethan collar and bringing her to a veterinarian so they can give medication to help her feel more comfortable while this heals. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

    Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could also be an infection. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It could be a wound from trauma, tick/insect bite, or a histiocytoma. Histiocytoma’s are benign growths on young dogs that are pink raised button like masses that can ulcerate. They tend to form more often on the limbs. They also tend to go away on their own in a few months. You can clean it and apply an antibiotic cream and prevent licking up see if it resolves. It it persists or grows I’d have your vet look at it. My dog has a big bump on her inner leg area. She's had it for about a week or two. It was small at first, but it seems to have gotten bigger. It wasnt red at first , now its red and it hard. What can it be and can it be treated at home?? Please help.
Hi there! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is likely a focal area of dermatitis. This is likely to resolve on its own as long as you prevent any further self-trauma (preventing her from licking at it for example). You can get an e-collar from your local pet store or simply just keep a very close eye on her to prevent further self-trauma. In most cases of mild infections, if this is done at home, they can resolve as long as you keep that area clean. If no improvement of worsening is noted in the next 3-4 days, then have her examined by your veterinarian. However, there is a good chance she can do well at home. She is adorable! Have a good night!

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors (very unlikely given the age). It looks like she may have a bacterial infection in the skin there. You can try a product such as this at home for a few days, and put an ecollar (cone of shame) on her to keep her from licking it and making it worse, but if it’s not improving after 3-5 days or if it’s getting worse, get her in to see your vet. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for envir

From your pictures, a possible cause might be a lick granuloma. These start for some reason (sometimes a bug bite, a small scratch, or a small skin mass) and the dog licks at them and makes it worse. They lick at it and push surface bacteria deeper which makes it itch, so they lick. It becomes almost a habit like a human biting their fingernails. So- I would recommend a visit to the veterinarian. They can check to make sure that is what it is , make sure that the inciting cause is gone, and do some diagnostics to determine a treatment plan. Has there been any changes to Neo's environment? Sometimes stress can start a lick granuloma or prolong it. Your veterinarian will most likely start antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. They might also recommend increasing his activity in case boredom is a cause. If there is a small skin mass present- they will recommend diagnostics on that. Good luck! Our dog has a red bump or scrape on the top of her paw. She seems to be acting ok, just licking it a lot. We tried to clean it with peroxide and wrap it but she is trying to take the bandage off
It is hard to comment too much without a picture of the red bump/scrape. If she is licking it then I would recommend an ecollar over a bandage because the bandage can harbor moisture which can lead to infections. I would recommend getting an ecollar and calling your veterinarian in the morning to see if they can fit you in. This is not an emergency but I would have them check it so she doesn't make it worse by licking it. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Hello. Is it possible that Charlie was bitten by something like a tick? This just looks like an acute inflammatory reaction. If you have some hydrocortisone cream, I would just rub a bit into the skin several times a day. If you do not have any cream, then please visit your Petco who will have several brands, including Zymox which is a very good product. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies.
