My cat moved, is hiding, and won't eat. How to help a stressed cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

My cat who i had previously at my moms, i just got back a week ago so he’s in a new house now. He knows one of the cats but the other two he doesn’t. He’s mainly staying under the bed unless i come home and I’m having a hard time getting him to eat. My mom has him used to these really unhealthy snacks and that’s ALL he’ll eat. He’s never been into wet food and barely even into dry food. Going to try a calming collar and see if it improves but was wondering what other steps i could take.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You may consider placing him in a separate area from the other cats for a few days with his regular food and water. Try the calming collar and the Feliway Spray (or the room plug ins work well too). You can also softened the food (or try a can of wet food) and heat it up a bit to bring out the flavor to entice him to eat a bit. If he still doesn't eat, there may be a medical reason why he is not eating and it may be a good idea for Oakley to see his veterinarian for an evaluation soon. I hope this helps a bit and thanks again for posting!
