My dog has a raspy bark. Is it a sore throat, cold, or something else?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 22 lbs

Our dog has had raspy vocalizations the past day or two. When he barks or whines its more hoarse than before. Is it possible a dog has the equivalent of a sore throat? Any immediate concern? Otherwise he seems totally fine, acting normal, eating, breathing is normal.

Yes, he probably has a mild upper respiratory infection or cold. That can cause a sore throat and change in their bark. This usually is a viral infection that will run its course in a few days to a week. Please let him rest and try to limit the excitement and reduce any barking. That will help keep his throat from getting irritated and help him heal quickly. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Ranger.
