Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 11 months old | 60 lbs

Hi my 7 yr old cat has just been diagnosed with kidney disease, drinks plenty of water and loves his wet food but he's stool is very hard and can go 3 days or more with out going to the toilet, vet said to give him paraffin oil but I have read dangerous if he inhales it and not swallows it, how do you stop that happening as he will not let you put anything in his mouth, thankyou.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend getting Tiga on a prescription kidney diet like Hill's k/d. I would add some non-flavored powder metamusil to the food daily (1/4 tsp to start). The prescription diets have proven to extend the life span of cats with kidney disease. If adding metamusil doesn't help I would ask your Vet about prescribing lactulose to help with the stools. Good luck!
