Puppy exposed to parvo. Should he get vaccinated or antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 14 days old

Can I start my puppy on antibiotics for parvo and still take him to get his first set of shots. The puppy doesn't have no symptoms of parvo but another dog in the house has died from it

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Fat Fat. Parvo is actually a virus so antibiotics will not prevent it, and the antibiotics we use in dogs who are suffering from clinical parvo are treating secondary infections. I would get him in to have his shots as soon as possible (though he still won't be fully protected until he has had a full series of puppy shots, every 3-4 weeks until 16 to 18 weeks of age) so I would be very careful with the puppy in your house if you had a parvo positive dog. You can refer to this article on disinfection https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951459 in the house and I would only take the dog outside in areas the sick dog did not use (i.e. if the sick dog used the back yard then bring the puppy to the front yard, etc.).
