My dog's not improving: lethargic, limping, diarrhea on meds. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 months and 1 day old | 43 lbs

My dog is lethargic, not eating anything, and his mood seemed to change overnight, literally. He's also limping from his back right leg, has diarrhea, and he threw up water last night. He was tested for parasites and those came back negative. He's on a nerve pain medication(gabapentin) and a bacterial medication(metronidazole) due to his symptoms.

If your dog does not start showing improvement after 48 hours of being on the medication and/or if his symptoms persist, then you should take him back to your veterinarian for a recheck. He may need additional diagnostics like blood work, X-rays, and/or a parvo test (depending on his vaccination status). He may also need supportive care like nausea medication and fluid therapy. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
