Dog threw up corn cob months later, now lethargic & won't eat.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Airedale Terrier | Male | neutered | 90 lbs

My dog ate a half a corn cob about 3 months ago. Yesterday, he threw up what appears to be the cob. Is this normal? He's acting lethargic and won't eat. What's going on?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Corn cobs can stay in the stomach for months. I would worry that the entire con didn’t come up and has move out of the stomach causing an obstruction. Gus needs up see your vet today since he lethargic and not eating. Good luck!

It would be hard to say without knowing how much he ate. It would be a good idea to have him examined by your vet in person, and an X-ray taken, to make sure there aren't any more corncobs in Buster's belly.

I would be concerned unless you're certain the pieces of corn cob he ate were the same size or smaller than a piece of his kibble. Corn cob is not digestible and can easily cause an obstruction. If he just ate the corn cob I'd recommend seeing an emergency vet - you can discuss x-rays or inducing vomiting to retrieve the corn cob.
