My dog is sneezing and wheezing. Is it reverse sneezing? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 6 lbs

My baby girl sneezing more. And she starts doing this wheezing thing that kind of sounds like human does when they’re trying to breathe through their nose but it’s clogged. She doesn’t do it all the time but she’s doing it more and more. And unfortunately I can’t afford to take her to the vet. What do I do

I'm wondering if Daisy might be reverse sneezing when she's making this new noise. A reverse sneeze and a sneeze can have similar causes - anything that irritates the nose and throat including allergens, upper respiratory infections, nasal foreign material like pieces of grass or even parasites can all cause sneezing and reverse sneezing. I usually don't get too concerned about either one unless there is also nasal discharge or the sneezing/reverse sneezing is occuring frequently enough that it seems to be affecting the pet's ability to rest. If so I think that your best bet is to see a vet unfortunately.

You may be describing a reverse sneeze. These and wheezing can be triggered by allergies. If she sniffed something or got something irritating then it causes an attack. Different tricks work for different people. Some blow in the nose gently others cover their nose to help calm them. Sometimes Benadryl can help If it happens the best option is to video it so you can show your vet exactly what it is
