My kitten pooped worms after deworming. Is this normal? Will he be okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 9 days old | 1.63 lbs

7 wk old male kitten, 1.63 lbs. Rescued 1 wk ago. 1st vet visit was today, got a kitten pkg that included a dewormer. Poor kitty couldn't make it home & defacated in the carrier on the car ride home. Wasn't much I could do as I was driving but now that we're home I looked & what looks like gross noodles are mixed in with foul smelling liquid-like stool. Are these the worms that the dewormer took care of? Should I try to save the fabric liner I was using or just throw it out? Will he be okay?

They may or may not be related to the deworming today, but either way they definitely roundworms! Call your vet to let them know what you saw. Chances are that the dewormer they used today will be enough to treat them. Make sure to repeat the deworming in 3-4 weeks to make sure the infection is completely taken care of!

If the diarrhea has been going on for longer than three days, then it's best to get it treated by a veterinarian. Roundworms are a possible cause of diarrhea, but not as likely as some other parasites and bacteria. The fact that Louis has had more gas indicates an infection besides roundworms. The vet will be able to help identify the cause and give effective treatment. I hope that helps and Louis gets better soon.

Hello there, It can take several days for diarrhea to clear up. He is likely still passing one life cycle of dead worms, and the intestines need to heal from the secondary parasitic inflammation. I would expect his stools to be totally normal several days after his next deworming in two weeks. Your vet can recommend a bland diet or probiotic which may help Zion resolve or manage his diarrhea better and faster. I hope this helps.
