My cat gained weight but was diagnosed with diabetes. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Weight Gain and Diabetes? Our vetenarian diagnosed our cat with diabetes last weekend. He was himself surprised by the lab results indicating a glucose level of 25 mmol/L, and everything else normal, as our cat gained 2 pounds since last year. The symptoms that prompted us to consult were that our cat has been routinely relieving himself outside his litter boxes. We noticed in the last month a slight increase in his demand for food and water, but not a dramatic one. He also acts normally.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would check the blood sugar again. Stress can make the blood sugar go up. Can you post the blood work as your values are not the same as the US? I would confirm it again. I haven't in 13 years seen a diabetic cat present with out weight loss. Unless you caught him very early.
