Why is my senior dog peeing everywhere after a back injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 14 years old | 4.5 lbs

My 14 yr old Chihuahua has had run of the house for most of her life. She was potty trained as a pup to go on a pad in a specific bathroom. She recently had a back injury and her hind legs were affected. At first she couldn’t stand or walk, much less squat, so she had lots of accidents. She was on cage rest for a few weeks and now is doing great. The problem is that she is still peeing wherever she wants. She sometimes attempts to make it to the pad, sometimes succeeds, but usually not. Advice?

I am happy to hear Feebi is feeling better. I would recommend checking to make sure she does not have a urinary tract infection. Female dogs are more prone to urinary tract infections and with her history of a back issue this is possible. IF she does not have a urinary tract infections she might be having trouble controlling her urinating due to nerve issues associated with her back issue. I would discuss possible urinary retention medications with your vet but also start over with potty training like when she was a puppy. Keep her in smaller areas if you are not around, reward her urinating with a treat and even limit her water through the night. I hope that helps
