What's this crusty black spot on my dog's skin? Wart or skin tag?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 5 years and 3 months old | 20 lbs

My dog is a mini pinscher and on his belly and now under his chin he has a black spot which is crusty. Is this a wart or skin tag? Should i worry.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Bud it’s hard to say what’s going on with his skin. Skin tags usually look like cauliflower looking small lumps. They can get crusty if Bud scratches them. If the area on his skin is flat and crusty it could be evidence of a skin infection. I would recommend taking Bud to the vet to look at it to be sure. It’s not emergent however and both are very treatable. Good luck and kisses to Bud!
