My dog has watery poop with blood after rawhide. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 65 lbs

My dog just did a watery poop with a small amount of bright red blood in it. She's fully vaccinated but had a rawhide chew yesterday. Behavior is totally normal. Since its Sunday, only the emergency clinic is open. Is this an emergency or can it wait until tomorrow?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Luna! Blood isn't uncommon in the stool of dogs with diarrhea. The blood indicates inflammation in the colon. The diarrhea and blood can be from the raw hide so I would avoid them in the future. If she is eating, bright and not vomiting you can wait until Monday. Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, other dietary indiscretions, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new treat/table food/food. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish Luna the best!
