How to get a nursing dog to eat when she's distracted outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 12 days old

Nursing dog not eating? She eats when she’s locked in a spare stall in the stables but when she’s in her dog house she barely eats so I moved her and her pups out to a dog house and she doesn’t eat my theory is when she’s locked in the stable she’s bored and nothing better to do than eat but when she’s out she’s playing with the other dogs today I locked her in the stable so she would eat but tomorrow a new horse is coming so I can’t put her in any more how can I make her eat when she’s outside

Is there any way you can set up a pen for her outside by her doghouse? If she is still active, and the puppies are gaining weight, and she's alert, caring for the puppies, and isn't vomiting, having diarrhea, etc, she probably is getting enough to eat; however, of course there is concern that she does need to be getting enough nutrition for herself and the puppies. Check her weight and the weights of the puppies every 2-3 days and make sure everyone is holding their own. You can also add canned food or boiled chicken to her food to encourage her to eat. Make sure she has a place where food is available to her but not to the other adult dogs. I hope that helps you. Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
