Why is my hamster's red, scabby rear spreading and losing hair?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 22 days old | 0.45 lbs

My hamster’s behind is red, dry/scabs, and losing hair. It seems like it’s spreading because it used to be small. I tried washing it off at first because it look like he was dirty/dry fur. I don’t know if it’s from stress or if the other hamster is hurting him. I’ve sperated the injured on to see if he heals but what should I do?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem.
