My dog is coughing and swollen. Does she need an emergency vet now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 11 years and 11 months old | 70 lbs

She started the slow kill treatment on my vets advice because of her age, health, and stage, treated with advantage multi and today became swollen and having a bad cough, (several soft coughs then one loud throat clearing one at the end) I understand this is most definitely ascites from chf and I need to get her to a vet but I'm over an hour away and she's a bad traveler. Will this be too traumatic or should I wait untill Monday when my local vet opens? I have 20mg lasix can I give her that?

Anabelle shouldn't wait until Monday to see a veterinarian. Not going to the vet may be riskier than transport if she has fluid buildup from her CHF. It may begin to affect her breathing which could make it a serious emergency. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending doses in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). If possible contact your veterinarian and ask, then medicate her as per your doctor and take her in.
