Why is my senior beagle hiding, tucking tail, and crying when touched?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 28 lbs

My 10 Year old beagle has been walking around with her tail tucked in for a about a couple of days now. She cries when we try to pick her up, specially by the joints. I tried to lift her tail and she cries also. Her belly doesn’t seem distended or hard. She keeps hiding under tables and chairs. She’s doesn’t seem to be very comfortable.

Beagles often have pain from intervertebral disc disease. I recommend a veterinary exam and they will probably prescribe pain medication and perhaps a muscle relaxer also. I treat these dogs with laser and acupuncture. It’s important to prevent jumping and let them rest. This may take a few weeks to resolve.
