My dog missed a heartworm doxycycline dose. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 95 lbs

my 95 lb lab came up heartworm positive. I started him on docycline but misread the bottle. suppose to give 1 tablet every 12 hours. The last 3 days I only gave him one thinking every 12 hrs? Do I need to give dbl dose? My vets office is closed and don't now what to do. I haven't given him one today because I have only been giving to him at dinner time like in 5 hrs?

If you mean you have only been giving it once daily instead of twice daily then go ahead and give your pm dose tonight and tomorrow start your twice a day dosing as per the label (1 with breakfast and 1 with dinner). Just make sure you give with food as doxycycline can cause tummy upset. It is okay you have only missed a few days and will get back on track tomorrow. When your vet is open again just call to let them know so they can note it in his medical record. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
