Red bump with dark center on dog's neuter incision 7 days post-op?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 7 months and 18 days old | 73 lbs

I have a 7 month old dog who was neutered 7 days ago. His incision scar has been healing great but now he has a red bump with dark in the middle of it.

This sounds like he may be having a reaction or mild infection from the knot in the suture. If the rest of the incision is healed I recommend gently cleaning the bump with hydrogen peroxide. Sometimes it will break open and a small amount of fluid will drain then it will heal. As long as he’s feeling fine give it a few more days to improve. If it worsens or is painful then I would take him in for an exam. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Beau.
