My cat is losing weight quickly and muscle. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

Cat; 8y/o F; Hx obesity to 18lbs. Recent weight loss to 10lbs over 6month period. Energy normal, appetite normal, snuggly. Haunches wasting. Changed to diet food 2mo ago. Should I pursue lab testing? I know she is a much healthier weight, but I’m concerned about the rapid rate of weight loss. Glad she’s acting normally but concerned about something more pathologic at play.

I understand what you are saying about Lulu. I would recommend doing at least a base line blood test which checks red blood cells, white blood cells, organ function, thyroid function and blood sugar. Most cats will not loose this amount of weight in a short period. Also it sounds like you are seeing some muscle wasting which does not happen in typical weight loss. A good vet exam and some basic testing will help you determine what caused the weight loss. hope that helps
