Why is my puppy yelping when pooping after anal gland expression?

My puppy had his anal glands done today and now when he tries too poop he yelps!! Is this normal?? Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Male | neutered | 9 months and 22 days old | 13.6 lbs

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ollie! It isn't normal for a dog to cry during defecation. It could be that the anal glands are inflamed from being full or from the pressure of being expressed. If it continues call your Vet they may just prescribe something over the phone or want to recheck him. I usually prescribe a steroid taper for things like this. Good luck!
