My dog has ongoing hiccups, should I be worried if no other symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old | 90 lbs

If there are no other symptoms, how worried should I be about ongoing hiccups? I'm dogsitting a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix who is usually very healthy. He woke me up at 4am with hiccups and seemed out of sorts (maybe just annoyed). He was still hiccuping a little bit when I left for work almost 3 hours later. I did get him to drink a little water, and I think that helped some. I don't want to worry his owner if it's nothing to be concerned about, but I want to make sure he's okay.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Hiccups are spasms of the diaphragm and can occur from excitement, eating or drinking too fast (swallows air), stress or fatigue. If Axie is eating and drinking and NOT retching or vomiting I would think he should be fine. Also be sure he can rest comfortably and his belly isn't swollen. If he won't eat or is vomiting or retching you should contact the owners and take him to a Vet. If all else is fine maybe check in on him an lunch. Good luck!
