Why is my dog eating grass and not eating during a phantom pregnancy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 30.8 lbs

Hello, my sprocker spaniel Lilly is 1 1/2 years old. She suffers with phantom pregnancies, she is currently having one now. She is reluctantly eating her food only when encouraged (very out of character) and is not her usual bubbly self! Shes always eating grass and this morning had a very long clump of grass (that I had to pull out of her bum), Is there any advice on why she is always eating grass and if it’s related to why shes not eating much? Thank you

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lilly! Yes, the decreased appetite and eating of grass is likely related. When dogs are nauseous or have stomach issues they will eat more grass and not eat. Both don't have to go together. The false pregnancy may nor not be the cause. Possible causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, toxin ingestion, dietary indiscretion, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new treat/food/human food. Also because she isn't spayed we always worry about a pyometra in a sick intact female, that is an infected uterus. I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If she starts vomiting, has increased lethargy or abnormal vaginal discharge she should be seen by a Vet. Also I would consider spaying her due to the frequent false pregnancies. Good luck!
