My dog's belly rash is worsening. What can I do before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 9 months old

Good evening, I recently noticed a small rash on my dogs belly and made a vet appointment. They are unable to get her in until the 20th and tonight I noticed it’s progressively worse. Any tips for this until I get in or should I take her somewhere if I can get in sooner?

I am sorry to hear about Kali! You could call your vet and see if they can give you a medicated shampoo to use until her appointment, which can sometimes be helpful with milder rashes, and ask if they feel it is safe to offer her an antihistamine over the counter such as Benadryl or Zyrtec. If your vet doesn't carry shampoos you can order a medicated shampoo online such as the Duoxo Chlorhexidine or Calm line of products https://www.douxo.com/us#redirected. Also be sure she is on an effective flea control product (your vets office may carry a variety of products such as Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, and Comfortis).
