Why does my dog need multiple vet visits for anal gland abscess?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

My dog had an abscessed ruptured anal gland. My vet operated and packed with antibiotics and says he needs to do it two more times. Is this typical?

Unfortunately King Charles Cavalier Spaniels are notorious for anal gland abscesses. If your vet surgically removed the anal glands there may have been a very large cavity from the abscess and it is not good to leave that empty. So it needs to be packed in order to put pressure on the tissue to entice it to heal and fill up. If he just evacuated the anal sac (lanced it and removed all the pus, but did not remove the anal glands) and packed it with antibiotics, he will have to do this several times in order to kill all the detrimental bacteria that caused the abscess.
