My cat gags like a hairball, but nothing comes up. Call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 8 lbs

My cat keeps making gagging noises, like she is trying to cough up a hair ball. But nothing comes up except for a small amount of food and hair a few days ago. It’s been going on for a week or so. Otherwise she is totally normal. Eating, grooming, drinking, playing, affectionate. I’ve been giving her some hair ball relief gel that I got at Petco for 5 or 6 days, hasn’t seemed to help. Is there anything else I can do at home or should I take her in to be seen at my vet’s office?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, I would recommend taking Maise in to see her veterinarian soon. It is possible Maise may actually be coughing. This can be due to an upper respiratory infection, throat polyp, feline asthma, or a heart condition. Your veterinarian will do an examine and carefully listen to her lungs and heart. An x-ray may be recommended as well to get a better view of the heart and lungs. Treatment will then depend on the diagnosis. In the mean time, you can try a humidifier in areas where Maise spends the most time as this may help a bit. I hope this helps!
