Why is my female dog aggressive after her male dog returned home?

We have two dogs, one female one male. We lost our male dog for a little over a month. Today when we got him thru the front door he was so excited to see her, but she had a different reaction. Growling running then nipping him. They've always been best friends, actually when we first lost him she didn't eat for 3 days. Why may she be giving this hostile reaction? They've known each other for 8 months. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 17 days old | 3 lbs

Im so glad you found your dog! She may need some time to reacclimate to him. Consider having him examined by your veterinarian since he was gone so long. Afterwards a good bath and a gradual re-introduction would be recommended. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may decrease any anxiety or aggression associated with his return.
