Why is my cat losing her voice and congested after a new kitten?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9.9 lbs

my cat has also had the same symptoms, since the introduction of a new kitten. She started with a croaky voice and then now has lost her voice completely. Other than showing signs of congestion and lost voice, she has no other symptoms. I have taken her to the vets twice, first time they gave me an anti inflammatory, the inflammatory made her nauseous. I took her back two days later and they said to stop the anti inflammatory and they gave her antisickness. What could be wrong with my cat?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Hallie! How long has she had these symptoms and how old is she? It is likely a viral infection she got form the kitten. It should run it's course in 2 weeks or so. As long as she is eating and otherwise fine you can ride it out. If she has a fever or isn't eating she will need support and medications from your Veterinarian. If she is an older cat and this has been going on for several weeks to months I would ask your Vet to do a sedated oral exam to check for a mass. I wish you the best!
