Why is my dog depressed during her second heat cycle? Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 11 lbs

Lilly is generally a happy and active dog. She is now on her first 4 days in her second heat cycle and has been quite depressed. She’s eating well but not even excited for treats. She is usually very excited all the time but now not even going out will really interest her. She did not behave this way during her first cycle. Is this normal? Or should I get her to see the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lilly! I have seen dogs act this way when in heat. If the discharge is normal, she is eating and not vomiting I think you can watch her. I always tell me, you know your dog best. So if she is worrying you it won't hurt to have your Vet do an exam. Even if it is just for peace of mind. I wish you and Lilly the best!
