Is my dog's diarrhea caused by trazodone for travel anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old

The vet prescribed 25-50mg of trazodone hcl to my 24lb pug for aniexty while travelling. I gave him about 35mg Thursday, 25mg Friday and less than 25 on Saturday and that was all. Sunday night he started with diarrhea, yesterday and still today (Tuesday). Has not eaten anything besides dog food. Can this be a side effect of the trazodone?

I am afraid, this could indeed be a side effect of Trazodone. The manufacturer lists the following possible side effectsÆ Trazodone Side Effects in Dogs Lethargy, Sedation, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Panting, Hyperactivity, Shaking, Restlessness. I suggest you contact your vet and ask about dosage adjustment.
