My husky is paralyzed. What are the causes of dog hind leg paralysis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 107 lbs

100lb husky became paralyzed 10 months ago. Hind legs only. Loss of bladder control and bowels. Can still move tail. Had X-ray which showed compressed disc. Can’t afford MRI or surgery. Could compressed disc be the only reason for paralysis?

I am sorry to hear about Koba. While compression of the spinal cord is the most common cause of paralysis in dogs there are other possible causes including trauma to the spinal cord and tumors compressing the spinal cord. Unfortunately if your dog has been paralyzed for this length of time improvement even with surgery is very unlikely because the compression of the spinal cord for this length of time likely has caused permanent alteration. Many dogs do well with wheel chairs/carts, though in a dog as large as 100 pounds that is a much more difficult situation and you need to consider his quality of life and discuss with your vet if you have concerns about that quality and whether or not it can be improved or if euthanasia should be considered if the quality is poor.
