Is my dog's hookworm deworming treatment normal for a 1-year-old pup?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 50 lbs

The first time I had a puppy (5-6 months) that had round worms, the vet at a different clinic gave her 3cc each dose of the deworming meds to take at home every week for 3 weeks. This time around, I have another pup, approximately 1 year old, who was DX with hook worms and the vet gave her the oral deworming ( looked like a 10cc dose) that I recognized from the last time and then told us to follow up with her Tri-heart in a month. Is that normal? Not trying to say I don’t trust the vet btw

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are many ways to treat things that are all appropriate. The dose of dewormer is weight dependent so if the same drug was used it is likely the new dog weighs more or they used a different dewormer. A lot of vets use the heart worm prevention as a dewormer because it also takes care of intestinal parasites. It is really Vet preference. I hope this helps!
