Can a nursing dog eat adult dog food when puppy food isn't an option?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 7 days old

Is it ok to feed my nursing dog adult dog food instead of puppy food? I have to walk everywhere and getting a delivery is hard because my house is so hard to find that usually my deliveries get lost my local store only sells adult dog food butchers tripe mix or winalote or scampie since I don’t have a car it’s very hard to get to anywhere that sells puppy food she eats 4 cans of butchers tripe mix a day or 2 big cans of winalote

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It isn't ideal to feed adult food but if it is impossible to get it then you can only do what you can do. I would discuss with your Vet supplementing with Calcium as she is a small breed dog and low calcium is risky right after birth from nursing. They can decide if she is at risk and provide dosing and when to start. I wish you and Coco the best!
