My dog is still itching. Can he take Benadryl daily for hot spots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 45 lbs

My dog has been itching his tail for the past few weeks. He now has hot spots. We called our vet and they said to try benadryl. He's 40 pounds so we give him one 25mg at night to help him sleep. The itching hasn't stopped with the benadryl and he's hasn't had any side effects to it either. My question is can he take this benadryl daily? He's been taking it for 6 days now in a row. We have an appointment tomorrow with our vet, but we wanted to give him one more tonight.

He can take benadryl daily, but it is not going to solve the problem and it's not likely to help. anti histamines does not usually work well on dogs, he will need other prescription meds in order to get it resolved.
