Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 12 years and 9 months old | 2.8 lbs
About a month ago I noticed the OS was disolaying cataracts. He still has a good menace response, but whether it is true vision or shadows, I am not sure. As a technician myself, I have never seen one eye develop cataracts unless there was an underlying reason/cause. There has been no injury, he shows no pain signals, and has no other major medical issues. He also has a lotnof weeping from the eye, but the discharge is clear. Any thoughts/suggestions would be most welcome.

I am sorry to hear about Phantom! Cataracts can be from a variety of causes, and they aren't always one we can identify. Many cataracts are actual a result of genetics and not something that happened to the dog or a result of illness, thought it is important for your vet to examine your dog and get a good history to make sure there isn't an underlying issue. I would recommend having Phantom's vet examine the eye to ensure it is a true cataract and not nuclear sclerosis if you think he is still visual. I would also be concerned if the eye has increased weeping that he could have uveitis (inflammation in the anterior chamber of the eye) or glaucoma as a result of the cataract which can cause pain and increased tear production. Your vet can check the pressures in his eyes and determine if medication is needed. You can read more about cataracts at https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951531
