My dog has blood in her stool after anal gland expression. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

My dog wasn’t feeling well this past week. She wasn’t eating and all she did was lay down on her side. She was in pain where her anal glands were and so I took her to the vet. They said she just needed her Anal glands to be expressed because it was a bit full. The day after her glands were expressed she became normal happy and playful again. She was eating her food and everything seemed fine however I noticed that there was blood in her stool. What should I do?

Some specks of blood would not be uncommon after having severely impacted glands emptied but you should have them rechecked if it persistts longer than 3-5days or the pain returns. A fiber supplement such as glandex can help prevent recurrent issues
