Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 29 days old | 18 lbs

My pup ate some of his puppy pads, already threw up, but still won't eat or drink water. He just wants to sleep. Is there anything I can do to get him to get fluids?,

Ideally, Timber should be physically examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Abdominal x-rays should be done to rule out a partial or complete obstruction. IV or subcutaneous fluids can be given to rehydrate him if necessary. If he is vomiting, do not feed him. Fast him for 8-12 hours then try a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. You can offer very small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte, no more than a tablespoon or two at a time every hour. If the vomiting persists, stop and have him checked/rechecked by your vet.

Poor Maxiie! He could have a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Hello he may be having a little bit of residual nausea which is why he won't eat. If he's drinking water and holding it down OK, sometimes a bland diet like boiled chicken white rice can help. However if he begins vomiting again, becomes depressed or seems painful, or eats and vomits then he should be seen by his veterinarian.

This often indicates that something is either directly upsetting her stomach, or generally making her feel nauseous. This can be a start to a worse disease that causes vomiting, diarrhea, or other problems. However, sometimes this is just a temporary upset stomach. If she is showing other signs of illness (i.e. vomiting, decrease in activity), then it's best to take her to a vet doctor for an evaluation and treatment. Otherwise, it's best to just let her stomach rest and ensure she has plenty of water. If she is not drinking water well, then you can put rehydration salts (ORS) in her water. Sometimes it takes a day or two before they eat and it's OK as long as she is otherwise acting normal, because they can go weeks without eating before it's life-threatening. If she goes longer than two days without eating, then it's best to have a vet doctor evaluate her. If you have further questions or need further clarification, then you may consider having an online consult with one of our vets on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This way, you can send unlimited pictures and have a text conversation with a vet. I hope that helps and Lucy gets better soon.
