My pet's enrofloxacin smells like vinegar. Is it safe to use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 4 months old | 2 lbs

i recently got enrofloxacin from a company other than baytril. the 200ml bottle of 5% was for a third of the price and i got it, as i could NOT get baytril where i live this time. now upon opening the bottle the strongest smell of vinegar hit me. the liquid was not thick like baytril but much lighter and this has got me really worried. i had manged to get baytril the first time and it smelled way different, this smells like it is pure vinegar and some alcohol. oral, expiry date in 2020. is it ok

If it was not ordered through a reputable distributor and you can’t contact the company to verify the product I wouldn’t use it. I wouldn’t expect a strong vinegar smell, although I don’t necessarily think that this means it’s a counterfeit product. If you are able to contact someone with the company they might be able to reassure you that the enrofloxacin is good.
