My cat licked human shampoo, vomiting & diarrhea. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 22 days old | 3 lbs

While I was gone a bit, my niece bathed my cat with hooman shampoo and I think it might have licked some of it. The cat doesn’t eat, it has diarrhea and throws up from time to time. What am I supposed to do ? I’m not able to take her to a vet today so could you help me, please?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ingesting or licking off a small amount of shampoo shouldn't be too worrisome. The vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite may have another medical cause such as an infection from a virus or bacteria or perhaps a parasite. I would recommend Nami see her veterinarian for an exam and evaluation soon. Your veterinarian may want to test Nami's stool or run blood work or x-rays to help determine a cause so she can get appropriately treated. Until you can get to her veterinarian, you feed her a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to help settle her stomach. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!
