Dog's neck lump keeps returning. Is surgery the right choice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Olde English Bulldogge | Female | spayed | 6 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

My dog had swelling around her neck from a possible splinter she was taken to the vets where they did an throat inspection & xray which nothing was found. We then had a ct scan where they thought they could see a small splinter but wasnt sure. The swelling had gone down only a small lump was there so they said to monitor the area. For 10 months we had no issues, randomly the lump has got bigger with metacam is goes down but i think now she may need surgery but it really scares me. Please help?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bayley! If the CT scan showed a possible foreign body and the lump significant decreased I would go for the surgery. The only way you are going to know and possibly fix this permanently is to try. I know is is hard to make the decision and scary to put our pets under anesthesia for surgery, but I think it is the only option you have left at this point. The Vet will likely approach it as an enbloc mass removal. Likely to remove the entire swelling and then open it up. If no splinter is found then they should biopsy the tissue. If Bayley did well with anesthesia for the CT scan then she should do well for this. I wish you both the very best!
